TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY

This is a review of the book “Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher. It’s about a teenage girl named Hannah who took her life and recorded 13 reasons (corresponding to 13 people) why she did it in audio tapes. The audio tapes are to be passed from one person on the list to the next one. The whole story was told partly in her perspective and partly in Clay’s, a guy included on her list. In honor of the book, I will write 13 thoughts that I have about it.

1. The story is very unique; just the whole idea of it.
2. It’s also very gripping. I literally read the book in one sitting. Just when everybody’s deep in sleep, I’m crying my heart out. Seriously.
3. Hannah is talking from the dead. She’s dead but she’s very alive. She was the one telling her story, and you just can’t help but listen.
4. Clay Jensen. I can’t help but love him. He wanted to help Hannah. She pushes him away. Now part of him is blaming himself for the loss, and he is willing to find redemption.
5. It’s amazing how our very acts - no matter how trivial it may seem - could change, or in Hannah’s case, “take” a life.
6. It is a very emotional read. You may not cry, but deep inside everyone can relate.
7. It get’s a little confusing sometimes because of the two perspectives, but it’s still a very good narrative.
8. BACK STABBERS beware of your actions.
9. Rumors are very dangerous things.
10. Respect every person’s personal space.
11. When you want to help somebody and you’re sure they needs it but they’re pushing you away, try harder.
12. True friends are really really really hard to find. Be thankful of them.
13. There’s always hope in the end. This story started out tragically, but ended with hope. Sometimes it’s too late to lend a hand to somebody. But there’s still a world-full of people who could use a little help.

Here is my favorite quote from the book:

Hannah: That tiny scar you’ve all seen above my eyebrow, that’s the shape of Jessica’s fingernail…which I plucked out myself. Or maybe you’ve never seen it. But I see it every morning when I get ready for school. “Good morning, Hannah,” it says. And every night when I get ready for bed. “Sleep tight.” But it’s more than just a scratch. It’s a punch in the stomach and a slap in the face. It’s a knife in my back because you would rather believe some made-up rumor than what you knew to be true.

That line up there is full of hurt and betrayal that her friend Jessica would rather believe some fucked up rumor about her. If Jessica’s my friend, I would have had slapped her back.

So guys, look out for this book:

It’s totally worth your time.

Worst Week

This week has been the worst in the fifteen years of my existence.

Tuesday: I lost my phone.

Wednesday: I had my first ever chem experiment. It would have been cool, if I didn't have my lab partner as my lab partner. I don't like him, okay?

Thursday: I wore this new rubber shoes for my first diagnostic run for PE. As it turned out, my feet don't like this new shoes. I ended up with these ugly wounds on my ankle. They still hurt, by the way. And I can barely walk...Which brings us to

Friday: I would've/could've/should've just worn slippers to school yesterday because of my injured feet but I have Chem lab and it's a requirement to wear shoes inside the lab. Oh please.

Dear whoever is writing my life story,
Please be a little kinder next time. Not all of these things at once.

Oh The Tragic Irony

Remember when I said I wanna be a hero? Well a “martyr” is more like it. My phone was snatched this afternoon in Nat’l Book Store SM Fairvew. I’m cynical that justice will be served and my phone will be back, considering our country’s crime fighting system.

Nevertheless, I wish that somewhere, my phone will save a life. They can sell it to buy food and medicine, I don’t care as long as they’ll use it in a good way. If whoever took it will use it for his own selfish benefit, he can just rot in hell or be reborn as bullcrap (depending on his religious belief).

As for me, *sniff* I’m traumatized. I might not bear to own another phone until I’m thirty or so. I still can’t believe it happened, you know. At first I was like FUUUUUUUUUUUU and then five minutes later I’m all over the place crying my eyes out even while I was riding home. I have all the reason in the world to be upset you know! I have a WHOLE LIBRARY of wonderful books in there. I’m not even finished with Mirror, mirror. What have I done to deserve this?!

Dear phone snatcher,

I hope my phone will help you through your financial crisis. But if you took it even if you don’t need it, YOU BITCH I’M GONNA ASK SANTA TO CUT YOU IN HALF AS A XMAS PRESENT. I’VE BEEN A GOOD GIRL THIS YEAR.

The Girl Who Wouldn't Grow Up

I was born Nelvie Fatima Jane Soliven (call me Nj for short) and I live in the Philippines (beautiful country floating in the Pacific, wonderful mix of Eastern and Western culture). I’m fifteen. I started schooling early though, so I’m in college now. I’m taking up Biology in the University of the Philippines.

I’m a History and Mythology buff. I love conspiracy theories and paradoxes. :)

People know me by being the resident bookworm and movie junkie. I don’t play favorites when it comes to books though. I love love love Percy Jackson and The Olympians series, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter Series, and a whole lot more. My favorite fictional characters are Rachel Elizabeth Dare (from PJO) and Luna Lovegood (from duh, HP).

I’m generally a nice person, really. I talk to anyone. I also love getting to know other people, but not in a stalkish kinda way. I only cyberstalk celebrities (guilty). :))

I love reading and creative writing. I can sing a little bit. :”)

I’m also not very girly. Nor I’m an out-and-out tomboy. It’s weird. I have lots of guy friends and girl friends. I don’t see much difference between them.

My inspirations include Demi Lovato (great role model), Nick Jonas, David Archuleta, and Logan Lerman. Favorite authors: Sarah Dessen, Jodi Picoult, Lemony Snicket, Rick Riordan.

I have a pet rock named Pete. Contrary to popular belief though, Pete is not a “he” because rocks don’t suppose to have genders. Pete’s an “it”. I also have three heart-shaped parrot fishes. I named them after the three Baudelaire orphans: Violet (coincidentally, the big violet one), Klaus (the shy blue one) and Sunny (the small, aggressive and yellow one).

I’m bubbly. I’m kind. I’m friendly. I’m smart. I’m lazy. I procrastinate. A lot. I love school though. But NOT schoolworks. Projects bore me. I know you wanna know more about me, so feel free to ask anything or just leave me a message. Let’s be friends. :)
